What happens to quality
PNG is lossless, so nothing further is lost — but nothing lost earlier comes back either. The compression artefacts already in the HEIC are part of the pixels now, and PNG keeps them faithfully. Expect a larger file, often several times larger for a photograph; the reason to convert is a workflow that needs PNG, or editing the image without every save costing a little more detail. PNG is the right target for logos, icons, diagrams and screenshots of text, and for anything that will be edited and saved again.
What happens to transparency
HEIC and PNG both have an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels come through as they are — a logo on a transparent background stays on a transparent background.
iPhone photos, Live Photos and bursts
Most browsers outside Safari cannot open HEIC, so this page loads an HEIC decoder (libheif, compiled to WebAssembly) the first time you pick one — it runs in the tab like the rest, and nothing is sent anywhere. An HEIC can hold several images: the stills of a Live Photo, a burst, a depth map. The converter keeps the main image, the one your camera roll shows, and tells you when there were others. The rotation the phone recorded is applied, so a portrait shot comes out upright.
