SVG to WebP converter

Convert SVG images to WebP in your browser — drawn to pixels, then compressed at the quality you choose. Free, no sign-up, nothing uploaded.

What happens to quality

SVG is a vector format: shapes described as geometry, sharp at any size. WebP is made of pixels, so the drawing is rasterised — rendered once at its own declared size, no larger than 1024 px on the longest side, and fixed at that resolution from then on. Keep the SVG as the master copy and convert again whenever you need another size. WebP is also lossy, and the flat colours and hard edges SVG drawings are made of are exactly where lossy compression shows first. Keep the quality high, or convert to a lossless format if the result looks soft. An SVG that pulls in images or stylesheets from the web is refused rather than fetched: fetching them would send a request off your device. WebP is typically 25-35% smaller than a JPEG of the same visual quality and every current browser displays it, which makes it the sensible target for images going on a website.

What happens to transparency

SVG and WebP both have an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels come through as they are — a logo on a transparent background stays on a transparent background. An SVG is transparent wherever the drawing does not paint, and the WebP keeps that.

If your browser cannot write WebP

Every current browser displays WebP, but not every one can write it — older Safari versions in particular. When the browser silently hands back something else, the converter notices and says so, rather than giving you a file named .webp that is really a PNG. PNG and JPG work everywhere.

Your SVG never leaves this page

Most online SVG to WebP converters upload the file to a server and send the result back. This one decodes and re-encodes it with the image APIs built into your browser, so the WebP you download was produced on your own machine — you can check by opening the network tab, or by going offline and converting anyway.
