Where the text comes from
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin, traceable to a passage of Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum from 45 BC. Typesetters have used it as filler since at least the 1500s, and it reached designers through Letraset sheets and then PageMaker. The words are deliberately not quite Latin — it is meant to look like language without being readable as one.
Why nonsense is the point
Real copy pulls attention to itself. A reviewer reading meaningful sentences starts editing the words instead of judging the line length, the type colour and the rhythm of the page. Filler text keeps the conversation on the layout. Its distribution of word lengths also approximates English closely enough that a paragraph occupies a realistic amount of space.
When to use something else
Placeholder text hides the problems that only real content reveals: headlines that wrap awkwardly, empty states, names longer than the column, a product description that is one sentence rather than five. For anything past early layout exploration, prototype with content that resembles the real thing in length and shape. And check before you ship — published pages with lorem ipsum still in them are a recurring embarrassment.
