SHA-512 hash generator
SHA-512 gives the longest digest here, 512 bits or 128 hex characters, from the same SHA-2 family as SHA-256 but built on 64-bit words instead of 32-bit ones. Computed in your browser: the text you type is never sent anywhere.

Good to know about SHA-512
Twice the length does not make SHA-256 the weak one: 256 bits already puts collisions far out of reach. What SHA-512’s 64-bit arithmetic buys is speed on 64-bit processors without dedicated SHA instructions, where it often gets through long inputs faster than SHA-256. On recent x86 and ARM chips that do have SHA-256 instructions, the order flips.
It is the hash inside Ed25519 signatures, and the one behind the $6$ password entries of Linux’s /etc/shadow — although those run thousands of salted rounds, so a single SHA-512 of a password is not what that file stores. Its truncated siblings, SHA-384 and SHA-512/256, resist the length-extension trick that plain SHA-512 is open to.
SHA-512 reference hashes
Every digest below was computed by the same code as the generator above when this page was built, and checked against the value recorded in the site’s source — a mismatch stops the build. Inputs are hashed as UTF-8 bytes, with nothing added.

Getting the same digest on the command line
On Linux, printf %s hello | sha512sum prints 9b71d224bd62f3785d96d46ad3ea3d73319bfbc2890caadae2dff72519673ca72323c3d99ba5c11d7c7acc6e14b8c5da0c4663475c2e5c3adef46f73bcdec043, the value in the table. The more natural echo hello | sha512sum gives e7c22b994c59d9cf2b48e549b1e24666636045930d3da7c1acb299d1c3b7f931f94aae41edda2c2b207a36e10f8bcb8d45223e54878f5b316e7ce3b6bc019629 instead, because echo appends a newline and the newline is hashed too. On macOS the command is shasum -a 512. When a digest will not match, a trailing newline or a text editor’s different encoding is the first thing to check.
